Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

FUN THINGS TO REMEMBER

I've been editing some pictures from our trip, and it dawned on me that while we may have missed out on the sightseeing kinds of things, there were so many special moments spent just being together. I think those are the most important ones.

I know I posted a rather lengthy "life lately" kind of post recently, but these are just some fun things I want to remember in the years to come.

Like me, with a snake inside my sleeve, for example. Ha Ha Diego says hola. ;) He kept crawling inside my sweatshirt instead of staying around my neck like he usually does, and then he'd settle into the crook of my elbow, inside the sleeve. It feels so funny! At one point I got busy doing things and completely forgot about him...till he plopped out onto the counter. Glad I hadn't been doing dishes in hot water or something! I know many people don't enjoy snakes, and I never really gave it much thought until Ethan began asking for one, and...he's a great pet. A little high maintenance for my liking, but he's friendly and cute. Don't get me started on the snakes that people want as pets that can actually smother, strangle or eat you. That's just crazy.

Our little window herb garden. I am super excited about having all these fresh herbs in the kitchen! We're making plans for a few garden beds this summer; I'm skeptical but hopeful since we haven't had much success in the past.

Thinking ahead to outdoorsy things, I've been on the hunt for an actual patio set for our deck out back. It's pretty big, with an upper tier and a lower one, so I'd really like to put them to good use. There's one drawback: those sets are SO expensive! Yikes! But I've got to settle on something because I spent ten years at our old house putting it off, and I regret not having made that space livable and fun while we were there. Lesson learned. I think I may just have to win the lottery, or... look up DIY sets and put my crew to work, which is what I've been doing thanks to Pinterest. You can see my boards here.

I'm just calling this one a complete and total fantastic win for me. =)  Maybe the crust curse is lifting...

I love a man in the kitchen, and usually, I've got several. On this night they were whipping up a Chinese feast for us. We had crab rangoons and egg rolls, among other yummy things. I'm sure my future daughters-in-law will thank me, ha.

Boggle was big for the past few weeks, but Chess has always been a staple here. They bug me to play, but I don't know how, and every time they try to teach me, I remember that I just don't care enough about the game to care. Or pretend to. But I sure do love watching them!  =)

The snow is finally melting here and I plan to take advantage of the warmer air today. I can almost see the ground beneath the clothesline out back, which makes me more giddy than I should admit, and I can see the tops of some plants and shrubs around the yard. Hooray!!!

Now I'm off to walk off some calories from making this ooey-gooey dessert last night. I didn't really want to make it, but someone (it was Ethan) asked so nicely...and how can a Mama refuse that? Go make some and your family will think you're pretty great, too!

TIPS FOR PACKING FOR A ROAD TRIP WITH KIDS

We just got back from our big family trip to Washington, DC - what a beautiful, historic place to explore! I wish we'd had more time, except maybe not for this particular trip, because... we all got a nasty stomach bug two days in and had to cut the trip short, missing many of the tours and things we'd spent months planning for. I was really, really disappointed. I had such high hopes of what the trip would be for us as a family, none of which involved maneuvering a one-bathroom suite with six violently ill tummies. But we survived, and thankfully, we're all feeling much better now. I'll post some highlights of our trip later this week.

Over the years, lots of friends have asked me how I pack for our trips, mainly, what do we have to have, and what can we leave behind. Well, my answer is always: It depends. Our big (huge) trip to Guatemala a few years back was completely different than, say, a long weekend in Maine. Whether or not we're flying to a destination, and of course, the duration of the trip, all affect how I determine what we'll bring and what we won't.

TIP: Pack whole outfits rather than random articles of clothing, and include one for both hotter and colder weather than you anticipate.

We estimated about eight hours in the car to get to DC. We were off both times, over two on the way down, but only one on the way home (and that was because of all the hurl stops along the highway spanning the six states). Lovely, I know. Sorry.

Each person gets a bag or backpack to keep with them on the plane or, in this case, in the car. Everyone carries an extra change of clothing and some fun things to pass the time. Now that our children are older they have some snacks, too; but I did not relinquish control over the snacks when they were young because they'd just gobble everything up in record time and then not feel well. (A few friends loved my little headband/hair bow set up because they didn't get all smooshed en route and then I had a place to store them when we settled in. Go me. ha ha - It's simply a cheapo plastic container enclosed in a zippered baggie. Genius, right?)

Another way I save space is to pack multiple people's clothing into the same suitcase. Kids' clothes don't take up tons of space, and especially when traveling by plane, it's crucial to divvy up clothes in case one bag gets lost. Plus, it's easy to stash away packs of cards like this, which come in handy for needed downtime.

Another essential for us is to bring our own pillowcases. We never did this when I was a kid, but since I've been married and a Mom, it's a must. It's comforting and it means that no one fights over whose pillow belongs to whom (ie, who drooled/breathed/snotted/snored on that white hotel or rental pillow I think is mine...yikes!). Win win. And when you're all sick, this felt like the difference between making it out alive and not. I'm not even kidding.

TIP: Bring a small, flat nightlight or two for the hotel room or rental to help with late-night trips to the bathroom. (We often bring along a flashlight, too.)

Plastic baggies are your best friend while traveling the friendly albeit super-strict skies, and are still rather handy for the car. We stick to carry-ons as much as possible, but for extended trips, we obviously need more of, well, everything. For road trips like this one to DC, I pack whatever full-sized bottles have half or less left in them, and then I can simply toss them and not be bothered with them on the way home. (I also roll up a few spare plastic baggies to put inside these baggies so I'll have extras for snacks if we plan on buying food once we get to a place.)

TIP: Use those small plastic potion containers for holding earrings and other jewelry.

Below is my set-up for the car, which includes an emergency mini-medical kit; these items are placed in baggies in our luggage when we travel by plane. We all know what the essentials are, but for clarity's sake, here are mine: pain relievers (children and adult); cold & flu meds; personal, ahem, items and flushable wipes, and tissues. That package on the lower right is the ever-so-cool laundry...the name escapes me right now, of course!..the toss it in the washer and then the dryer sheet thing. They are THE perfect solution when we're renting a house or condo with a washing machine, which translates to: less laundry to pack!

TIP: If you'll be swimming, don't forget ear plugs or drops.

I'll be adding one more essential item to our medi-box for future trips: thick paper bags, for, well, you know. Sigh.

TIP: Bring along a pen, notepad, and a Sharpie pen for last-minute labeling...it could save you!

For lengthy car rides, I load the trunk with drinks and snacks. We alternate between audiobooks, movies, and favorite CD's for a couple hours, then stop for a quick break, when we dole out some of the goods.

We also get the wiggles out with a super speedy round of cross training moves, which makes even the grumpiest of travelers break out at least a little smile. I put on my drill sergeant face and shout out orders: fifteen jumping jacks, go go go, ten knee lifts, move it move it move it, etc etc. Gets 'em every time.

TIP: Pack a large, sturdy tote with snacks and then you'll have a perfect bag for carrying towels, pool/beach toys, sunscreen, whatever!, once you reach your destination.

This is probably not a novel idea to anyone but me, but since we were heading out at dark o'clock (4 AM), I wanted to have something kind of light and healthy for later in the morning. Like a fruit salad in a cup. They've been selling these in supermarkets for decades, but this is the first time I thought to make my own. Duh. (I used a rubber band to "hold" the fork and the baggie over the top.)

FYI: I found this to be the best way to package Ants on a Log, aka celery sticks with peanut butter and raisins, which I'd never thought of before, either. No more sticky, peanut buttery plastic wrapper or tin foil- it was great!

Another tip I rely on when we're hotel bound is this: label individual plastic cups with a Sharpie pen. I cannot even begin to tell you how much this mattered on this most recent trip. Invaluable. We don't have to keep track of glasses or bottles of soda, juice, powerade, water...anything!... because of having our own cups. Typing that out, it sounds really rather dumb, but it made our time in the hotel suite so much better and easier, which is true even when we aren't fighting over the bathroom.

I hope these were helpful to read. Traveling with kids is no joke! But it's so worth it, even when stomach bugs come along. We still had many wonderful moments together as a family, and there were important lessons learned- and relearned- in patience, kindness, and perseverance. Happy travels! Please share a tip in the comments if you have one- I love to hear how other families hit the road!  =)

I've also been working on some new sewing tutorials & tips, so I'll have those listed on the Rose & Ruffle blog soon. There's a little update there featuring some new items in my shop if you want to take a peek...

GLIMPSES OF SPRING

Happy St. Patrick's Day! We've had a very windy, snowy-then-sunny, and then sleety kind of day. The wind is blowing so hard now that I'm praying we don't lose power. Ugh. The other day, though, we got a taste of spring and loved every minute!

Kind of an awkward picture, but can you see how happy he looks? His little eyes were all squinted up with pure joy, and his cute nose wrinkled up with all the fresh scents and smells. He has his moments, this guy. Ha.

And this guy?!?! Ha Ha He sure makes life so much fun. He told me he was just hanging out, before all the snow melts for good. Well okay, then. ;)

It's late and we've got a busy week ahead. We're planning a big trip with the kiddos, and while it's stressful, it's terribly exciting, too. I've been making lists galore for weeks now, and now we're getting down to the nitty gritty. Goodnight!

LIFE LATELY

This is going to be one of those lengthy, what we've been up to kinds of posts. With tons of photos, because, well, what other way is there to do it?  =)

We don't get out with just these two very often. Don't we look so cold?!? Brrr....

Dad took the boys out for loaded burgers at Five Guys, so I took my little Isabelles out for lunch, too. I don't know what got into her, but halfway through our meal she started smoking her French Fries, and loudly. I nearly lost it when she called me "dah-ling."  HA  I can't make this stuff up.

Making crepes with berries and cream, and I thought the different colors looked so pretty.

Sending this one off for an overnight youth group trip. He came home with a ginormous bruise on his forehead and an even bigger one on his thigh. Life is all one motion for this one right here: fast forward.

It looks beautiful but truthfully we only lasted about fifteen minutes. It was a few degrees below zero without factoring in the wind chill.

Pond skating. I think the sun was actually out before I took this photo, and came out right after. ha ha My fingers were too numb to keep trying. Ethan was making her laugh all afternoon.

He also drove us an hour away to one of the bigger malls in the area. It was kind of fun to let the guys go do their own thing for a few minutes and then meet back up with Isabelle and me. Of course little Isabelle is with us. :) I'm not much of a shopper, nor do I particularly enjoy malls, but it just sort of happened, and it was fun.

Heading off to our new Bible Study. Caleb and Isabelle come with us and play with the other kids; Jonah and Ethan stay at home because there really isn't anything there for them. I don't love that part, but it seems to be the phase we're in right now. (Not a bad phase of them rebelling or anything; what I mean is, the study isn't for them, and they're much older than the other children, so they wouldn't be hanging out with peers/friends.)

We've traded in the balance beam for ballet slippers. She was SO SO excited to do ballet...until we got there and she completed her first class. Sigh. Not totally sure how it's going to go, but we'll see!

Just Ethan, Ryder and me on our favorite trails. I love this time with him.

My cute little pancake helper.

I don't change out my glasses very often, but after six years, I thought it might be time. I was sending these "sample" pics to William. Good thing I can laugh at myself. ;)

Can you see it? The snow is almost level with the railings! This is looking straight out the door in the back of the garage. Crazy snow this year.

It was also time for Caleb's second round of follow-ups for his broken leg. We're going on Year 2 now, and it has not healed as well as his doctors had hoped. So for now we monitor it and try to be extra careful- do you remember the comment I wrote about this boy above? Yeah, good luck with that one!

BOGGLE has invaded our house and I love love love it! I find them like this all the time. But they still can't their Mama, ha ha.

Isabelle has wanted to be a cowgirl for a long time, I think because she figures she'd just get to play with horses and ponies all day long. One of her Spirit Week days was to dress up as what you want to be when you grow up, and she debated between this and a ballerina all week long. And given that she hasn't actually liked ballet all that much, I'm figuring THAT was more about getting to wear a leotard and tutu to school than anything else. Which boring old Mom sort of put her foot down on. She doesn't look too upset about it.

We kidnapped the birthday boy and took him out to lunch. So fun!

The waiters all sang to him and his face was SO red.

Now with ponies and the birthday boy. Oh, and Ryder the wonder dog. Clearly my life is extremely dull and predictable.

I had to take this so people would believe me... I'm at the stop sign, trying in vain to see what's coming beyond that snow mountain. Crazy!

Ethan and I had a nice conversation the other morning after he asked me what I was reading. I took this picture so I'd remember the moment...
...and the moment quickly included a giant cat. Sneakers rubbed all over my hands as I tried to turn pages and then just flopped his large self right on top of my Bible, rolling over onto his back with his legs all up in the air. He is so funny.

Ah, and yesterday afternoon we were outside without mittens or hats or even coats! YES! So we walked babies (my baby was the dog) and chatted about life and stuff. She was extra excited because I had gone downstairs and opened up this stroller that's been sitting undisturbed for nearly two years and let her use it since she's so big now. We had a lovely walk around our neighborhood, but I was still a little sad at the thought of that stroller not having my own baby in it.

The Lord is near to the broken hearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
Psalm 34:18

The sadness is real and far-reaching, the emptiness hasn't left me, but I am trusting God to restore and to heal. My blessings are immeasurably more than I deserve.
