Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.

New Baby Bonnets at Rose and Ruffle

Hi friends! I've got just little minute to share some new things at the shop with you. It's been a good but busy week, lots of time spent outside planting and playing! I'll share a landscape/garden post soon because I'm pretty darn proud of our hard work. :) Right now the sun is peeking through the trees across the road and all the leaves are sparkling a million different shades of green, one of my favorite things ever. Here are some pictures of the brand new baby bonnets just listed at Rose and Ruffle... I LOVE them so much!!

I've included the direct links to the items, and these are all Ready to Ship. If you see something you like, contact me and I may be able to make something in a different size for you. Thank you as always. :)

Also, do you shop with ebates? If not, you should! It's so easy and it gives you money just for buying things you'd be buying anyway. I have a link on my sidebar, so you should check it out. Etsy participates with ebates now, too! (I would let you know if I might make a cent or two if you use my link, but I honestly have no idea. Oops. I should probably look into that, ha ha...)

Hope you have a terrific Thursday! We've got errands and well check appointments on our docket today...fun fun! ;)

Hiking the White Mountains: Coppermine Trail (And a Fun New Nightgown!)

My kids roll their eyes when they hear me say how amazed I am that little old New Hampshire has such breathtakingly beautiful mountains because they probably hear it no less than 70 times a year.
And then I proceed to wonder- aloud- how impressive some of the other state's mountains must be if we have these.
Now their eyeballs are literally bobbing around in their sockets.
I think it will be one of those charming things I'm long-remembered for.
"Hey, remember when Mom used to say...?" Insert laughter, smiles, and nostalgic joy.

Mother's Day was gorgeous. The kind of day that beckons you to the great outdoors.

That water was friiiiiiiiigid - Caleb had to walk through the brook to get there...he was the only one. =)

We had The. Longest. Winter. Ever. this year, and what is she super excited about?
Finding snow.

This was a really beautiful trail, complete with a mountain brook bubbling alongside you almost all of the way. There were several rocky areas which would not be suitable for very young children or for older folks who are a bit unsteady on their feet. As you near the waterfall, there is a rickety bridge to cross, which my angelic children would never, ever dream of hopping, jumping, shaking and/or swaying upon just in the hopes of sending their mother over the edge. Both figuratively and literally. Go figure.  ;)

I like steady ground. What can I say?

Now onto the fun summer nightgowns. I don't think I've shared this yet...sorry if I did and just forgot. It's a fantastic option for those of you who have something particular in mind but A. you don't sew; and B. you can't find it in stores or online.

Easter & Customer Packaging and Thank You Card Ideas

I was really happy when we woke to beautiful clear and sunny skies yesterday for Easter Sunday. Easter is magnificent no matter what, but it just feels so right when the sun is shining. Plus, my hair and Isabelle's often-unruly hair cooperated beautifully, which was an extra special treat since I have to leave before everyone else for choir and Daddy breaks out in a cold sweat at the thought of being on "hair duty."  ;) We had dinner here with my parents - it was such a lovely day.

Today is the 118th Boston Marathon and it looks like another gorgeous day. We'll be cheering on some friends (from home), and praying for everyone's safety. When we visited Boston last weekend, things were already well underway for the big race. We New Englanders are a tough breed. Boston Strong.

Now onto the packaging details for the items I make and sell... several of you have asked me about my packaging and Thank You cards. I wrote up a post about it HERE.

Have a wonderful Monday!

Family Fun + New Spring/Summer Nightgowns & Pajamas

Not only is it Monday morning already, but it's the first full week of March! I'm thrilled that this means beautiful Spring is making her mad dash to relieve us of cold and snow, but at the same time, I don't. If only time would slow, just a little. I can't believe that when I look back on the boys being small, so many years have now passed! It's true, what they tell you: the years really do fly by.

Today marks the day that I am an official homeschooling parent to three now. I thought I'd be a little anxious and nervous, but I'm just too excited to be nervous! As long as I have a plan...and I've got a plan, ha! Our state's school vacation was last week, so of course I threw a few trial runs in there to see what worked, and what doesn't work quite so well. Idle time for two of my three boys =  not working so well.  =) No big surprise there, I guess. Our mornings, in particular, are going to feel very different with this new schedule. A good different (I think).

Right before vacation, I was a chaperone for Isabelle Katie's class to the New England Aquarium- it was so much fun, but also a little stressful! That place gets ridiculously crowded, which of course is intensified when you're responsible for more than just your child.
This is kind of a silly, non-thrilling picture, and it's about the only one I have- Mothers watching little kids (who may or may not exactly listen to you, ahem) = NO TIME FOR TAKING PICTURES

On one of our fun days last week, we got all bundled up and spent a few hours snow tubing and snowboarding over at Pat's Peak in Henniker, NH. It's a pretty small mountain, but it's close by and very family-friendly; I didn't grow up skiing and boarding, so the bigger places feel way out of my comfort zone and easily intimidate me. Sorry kids, I'm sure you're scarred now and this will one day come back to haunt me. HA

There were also fun trips to the library, ice skating, movie days, extra special (and super delicious) treats made all week long, and on Friday, we celebrated my Dad's birthday with some extended family - well, actually, there might have been a teensy bit of drama surrounding that, but that's for another time. Sometimes it's especially hard being a girl, when you're extra sensitive to things that might ordinarily not affect you quite so much, but then you kind of lose it, oh, for about an hour or so. Yeah, that's probably enough said, ha!

I bet you're hoping I share a recipe for these scrumptious looking cream-cheese topped brownies, aren't you? (Later this week)

I even managed to squeeze in some sewing time. I am loving these cute little things for spring & summer! These are currently for sale, and you can get details by visiting my shop, Rose & Ruffle.

Okay, I just noticed the time, and I've got to get moving. This is an exciting week already because I will have another teenager in my crew as of Wednesday! I am so proud of the young man my Jonah is becoming- what a privilege to be his Mom!

One last thing... on the way home from Bible Study last night, Caleb leans forward and poses a question. Now, two things to keep in mind here: 1) Caleb somehow picked up this strange backwoods-Maine-meets-the-Bronx kind of accent when he began speaking- we have NO idea where it came from! When it's not driving me nuts it's actually quite amusing; and 2) he had such sincerity and utter innocence in his voice at the time.

"Hey Dad?"
"Yes, Caleb?"
"Can you ever close your eyes and just think of nothin'?"

This spontaneously sets off Round One of us dying in the front seat, and he adds:

"'Cause I just did it."

Aaaand cue Round Two. Oh did that have us in stitches for the whole rest of the way home!

For the record, his Dad's answer was what I expected: "Sure, whenever I want."
Ha Ha Ha Ladies, can you even imagine??? There is always something swirling around in my brain!

Have a wonderful Monday!

Making Clothes...Cuter

So let's pretend that I wasn't exhausted at the end of the day and have to go to bed by 9:48...and that it's still Tuesday. M'kay?

Hey there! It's Tuesday, my house is relatively clean, laundry is {relatively} caught up, AND...I had a fabulous Hair Day. Yes, so good in fact, I must use Capitals. I don't know what inspired me- okay, that's a lie. Two of the darlings had their well-checks today. With the doctor I kinda like.

Anyhoo.

I put my Pins to good use, pulled up my big girl britches, and plugged in the hair dryer, flat iron and curling iron. No, not all at the same time. And I did it! Me! I was all, "Whoa, this actually looks like the pictures in the pin!!!!" I posted a picture on instagram here if you're curious. And I had a springy skip in my step all day long.

Even if it was all of 19 degrees out today.

Anyhoo again.

Today I mailed my first ever saw-your-nightgowns-on-the-blog-can-I-order-some order! To Australia! That was kind of a thrill. Except for the fact that the post office guy made me stand on the sidelines for what felt like a hundred years, waiting on some form that turned out to be the wrong one, and then I had to wait more because he'd already called other people up. Hey there, remember me? The one who was here, oh I don't know, a hundred years ago?

Well we finally got things squared away and off it went. Then it was time to pick up Jonah and Ethan from the hockey rink at the park.Yet another perk from our liberating new homeschool adventure.

So. I've had this post brewing for quite some time and am just now getting around to write it. It all started with a plain ol' pair of black fuzzy gloves. And I wanted to make them...cuter! Check it out over HERE if you want to take a peek!

Not sure why this photo is looking so dark because these nightgowns (the order for Australia) were just about the sweetest things I've seen all month long! A marvelous antidote to the Arctic that has overthrown poor February.

Today (yes, it's Wednesday now) I've got to get some Valentine's things in order, good things, like cake. And heart-shaped bread.  =)

Happy Wednesday!

Everyday Ramblings

I know, I know. When am I not rambling?

I just thought I'd pop in with our little happenings from the week. Quite possibly snoresville to anyone but me, but that's all right.

Do you know what's really kind of neat? Finding out fun/funny stuff about your parents that you never, ever knew. For example, just found out that my Dad belonged to not one but two bowling leagues in his glory days. And he didn't know what "bumper bowling" was...until he decided to take the boys bowling and had such a horrible score that they talked him into the bumpers for the second string. HA! Even funnier? His score didn't improve that much. Now that just makes me chuckle.  =)

'So Dad,' I innocently ask. 'Were you any good back then?'

And he laughs loudly, grins from ear to ear, and answers, "Nah, never was much good at it. But I owned a spiffy pair of bowling shoes!"

If you didn't just giggle a little, then there might not be any hope for you, because that was pretty funny.

Oh, and the girls had a date all our own during the Man-Bowl. We had an in-house beauty parlor party, complete with Little House on the Prairie and hot cocoa. In the family room. Living.On.The.Edge over here, let me tell you.

Moving on.

It has been so, so cold here this week, but oddly, the snow seems to be disappearing. It doesn't look much like it did on this stormy morning over the weekend.

I love this sweet summer nightgown! It's listed here in my shop.
(There are some other ones listed, too, and some new items coming soon!)

I made a new header for my shop's Facebook page...what do you think?
Sweet Pea may be smiling here, but she and I had a rough afternoon/evening today. Whew.
There is a whole lotta fire in that cute little face.  ;)

You can see my facebook page here if you'd like.

I should have a post about my sewing area and our home office soon, and a little something we're finally finishing up in the kitchen! Have a great weekend if I don't "see you" before then!!!

Oh! I totally forgot something... the other day I discovered a terrible and offensive ad here on the blog and I was fuming MAD because I have blocked several types of ads as well as specific urls. The mister and I finally figured out how it was happening, since it had to bypass the blocks I have in place, and hopefully got rid of the awful ad. It's all very discouraging and I hope it doesn't happen ever again. Please know how terrible I felt about the whole thing- I'm sorry to anyone who had to see something like that on my blog.

Our world is so broken - as am I! - but I serve a perfect, patient and loving God, and good will prevail. But I have to admit that I get so discouraged by this particular issue, especially being a mother to young, impressionable boys - anyone else? I can't be alone in this, I'm sure, so how do you handle your discouragement/disappointment?

Christmas Shopping!

I know that the birth of Jesus is the real reason we celebrate Christmas- the very best gift ever given & received!- but I still get as giddy as a five-year-old all Christmas Eve night and into the morning! I love the anticipation of it all, the stillness in the early hours when I'm the only one awake, tiptoeing (I don't know why, it just feels like I should be!) near the tree, slowly lighting candle after candle until the room is all sparkly-glowy...

Then the house-shaking stomp gentle shuffling of ginormous little feet down the stairs, raspy voiced, uncontainable excitement, more candles lit- only these ones are birthday candles sticking out of coffeecake- and we celebrate His wonderful birthday, probably waking the neighbors with our heartfelt kitchen chorus. I cherish those squeals of joy, the heartfelt Thank you's and shared smiles.

But...today I'm talking shopping!

There is a great Holiday Gift Guide on the lovely Casey's blog, We Took the Road Less Traveled, and she has dedicated each day of the week to a specific theme (today's theme is Gifts for the Littles, wink wink). I know I'm trying harder to stay out of the chain stores and instead support local shops and businesses. Go USA! Here are the specific links if you want to take a look:

There are so many talented and creative people all around us, and I've really enjoyed discovering their shops through this Holiday Gift Guide!

Here are a few photos of some new things you'll find in my shop, Rose & Ruffle:

I've got a few marathon sewing shifts ahead of me to get some orders finished, but I'll be back in a few days with a round-up of my favorite Christmas cookies and goodies that I've posted on the blog over the years- they all travel well, are relatively simple & easy, and they make lovely gifts!

I think it's close enough to Friday now to say...
Happy Friday!

Busy Busy Busy

I couldn't let 11/12/13 pass without its due accolades! And I can't believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner...and then CHRISTMAS! Where has the time gone???

Poor Ethan still can't make it through an entire day at school, so there's a ton of driving back and forth across town. And waiting. Lots of waiting around. But I really do love having him around during the day, so it's totally worth it.

Overall, today was a productive, happy day. I woke up early as usual and saw Bill off, and then did a few things I've been neglecting lately, things that make a world of difference in my well-being: I stretched. Like, really stretched. Took my time and focused on each muscle, each breath, and the most wonderful feeling of gratefulness and peace swept through me. Then I read from my devotional book, craving and savoring Truth. Reflecting and letting go. I refused to turn on the computer to check this or that, and instead, I got lunches and snacks all ready to go, cut out some fabric for pajamas, tidied up a bit, and was generally just a more pleasant Mom during the breakfast shift. I even had enough time to make apple pancakes (and they came out just the way we love them- that perfect crispness on the outside and fluffy, nearly-gooey insides)!

I had a decorating committee meeting at church about an hour after dropping Jonah off there for school, so I laced up the sneaks and managed to get in 4.5 miles during that time. Nice! Granted, it was absolutely freezing cold and my nose was like a faucet for our meeting, but it felt so great to have gotten all this accomplished by 9 am! More sewing sewing sewing, and I've got a little something exciting going on with my shop this week! It just happened to be the perfect kind of day for the ever-wonderful Beef Stew, which translates to: it was like Antarctica outside, and it was all I had in the fridge. =)

Those first choices really do set the tone for the entire morning, which in turn, sets the tone for the entire day. Believe me, I know all too well those harried days when lunches are thrown together in between arguing matches and harsh, snapping words, and though we barely make it out the door, there is anger, hurt, and tears. Oh the tears!. 99% of the time, it's because I didn't choose to manage my time well. What a difference!

Pretty flowers help, too.  =)

Best Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes

Another week is flying by, and I've learned something important: I cannot be trusted with Halloween candy.

Like, ever.

E-ver.

Okay, so I think I've always known this, but yesterday was a good reminder. Sorry, kids. Mom fail.

I may have needed that extra sugar to tidy some things up for my Etsy shop...it does always get worse before it gets better, right? And speaking of Etsy shops, I even managed to sneak in a little photo shoot with Caleb, which was so much fun! (I highlighted that on my facebook page if you want to sneak a peek!)

So onto the pancakes...
Until recently, I had never made buttermilk pancakes. Or made anything with buttermilk, really. I think I was slightly intimidated, but I shouldn't have been! There are no strange complications, and they are delicious!

Okay, so truth be told, the frozen blueberries had already thawed by the time I got the first three off to school and got back to make Ethan's pancakes (he is still easing back into school days because of his concussion), so the batter was purple. Thus, grey-ish pancakes. Otherwise, they'd be a lovely golden brown.  =)

Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes
2 cups {unbleached} flour
3 Tbsp cornmeal
2 scant Tbsp sugar
2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp+ ground cinnamon
2 beaten eggs
1 1/2 cups fresh buttermilk* + 1/2 cup whole or 2% milk
3-4 Tbsp oil
1-2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries

Mix together dry ingredients; add the liquids and stir until batter is moistened; then gently fold in blueberries. We cook our pancakes on a griddle or pan with oil on medium heat.

I was worried about the cornmeal adding too much crunch to the pancake, but it adds just the right amount of, well, something good! They're light, but they're incredibly rich and filling, too.
I altered the original recipe from my BH&G trusty cookbook, doubling it as well. Depending on the size of your pancake, it should yield about 15-18. Because of the alterations, I would not recommend trying to "half" this recipe. Unless you're a culinary daredevil, and then I say, go for it!  ;)

*You can also use sour milk if you don't have buttermilk. You can make 1 cup of sour milk like this: place 1 Tbsp either lemon juice or vinegar in a glass measuring cup and add enough milk to make 1 cup total liquid; let sit for 5 minutes before using. (Adjust amounts for 2 cups or more.)

Well, it's the next day now...I didn't quite manage to get this post finished yesterday, but I did get to hold a 2-month-old baby girl in the nursery all night last night!  =)

Caleb was tossing and turning moments ago, and in the past, I might have gotten annoyed. So worried that I'd have to stop what I was doing, as if that could be so important. Today my heart chose right. Iron unplugged, flannel gently folded, all that can wait. I tiptoed upstairs into his room, and he asked me to spend a few minutes with him (we had a lovely mini-conversation about hover crafts, air force piloting, and how he will ever choose which branch of the military to join) because he isn't feeling so great. Just him and me, side by side, early morning declarations of love whispered low between us.

One day I will wake up, and these children of ours won't be here. And I will long for more time to have cuddled and held hands and whispered low in the dark.

Okay, now I'm late...I'm thinking it's a cereal kind of morning for us!

Updates

Right now, as I type this, the colored leaves are scurrying about the yard, being blown back and forth like bright autumn snowflakes. This is it. Once these slip from the branches, everything will be bare. I adore Fall, but this part just seems kind of sad. I don't feel ready for it yet, like another season of life just whipping past at its merciless pace. And I'm trying desperately to just hold on.

Ethan continues to recover, though the concussion isn't as minor as we had so naively thought. I don't like that he isn't well, but I do enjoy having him all to myself every day. He may be able to go back to school for 1-2 classes beginning Monday, and we'll see that goes. Soccer is done. For a long while. That has been hard. We tried to take a walk yesterday but didn't make it very far. Thank you so, so much to each and every one of you who prayed for our family!

Last night was Caleb's school's Annual Harvest Fest. There was some slight darting back and forth between Jonah's soccer scrimmage and Isabelle's gymnastics, but we made it. Ethan ate dinner with Bill's parents, Jonah left his game with Mimi for a sleep-over last night, so it was just the youngest two with us for a change. Harvest Fest is fun and all, but...A. I dislike crowds (like, seriously dislike crowds); B. After the 6th year, you sort of get that "been there, done that" feeling; C. Hmm, nothing. For some odd reason, A and B seem like enough.

And mostly I ache for this baby in my heart that we have yet to find. I never thought it would take this long, and some days I can keep busy and not dwell on it. But other days, like today, the ache gets a little bigger and my arms feel especially empty. If you're visiting from Kelly's Korner, Hello!, and you can read THIS if you want to catch up to speed a little bit. While adoption is miraculous and beautiful and life-changing, it can be so, so hard. I wrote a post HERE about that.

However...while we wait, I sew sew sew. (My Etsy shop is our primary fund-raising effort to pay for this second adoption.) I have been super busy and have added some Christmas pajamas to the collection! I love them! I hope you do, too. I will make a link to my facebook page and my Etsy shop below- I would love it if you became a fan of either, or both! I'll be posting about a sale soon on the facebook page....  ;)

Have a great weekend!

Saturday Morning Randomness

Totally random post. I started this post days and days ago, but my mind is in jumbles. Proceed with caution. Or just laugh at me. Whatever.  ;)

Random Thing #1:
The mornings have been SO DARK recently. It makes it hard to get moving. I'm the type who thinks the day is nearly over by 10 am, and while I'm generally pretty productive, I find myself feeling slightly frazzled at 9:58 and I start rushing around to get every.single.thing.on.my.list done. Weird, I know.

Random Thing #2:
Gravity has shifted. This is my theory anyway, because I refuse to believe that I can no longer manage to paint the upper corners of the bathroom while balancing on the edge of the bathtub. Without difficulty, that is.

Random Thing #3:
Fall is here and it's amazingly beautiful, and it's all going by so very quickly. Which makes me sad. I want certain things to linger, but time keeps bulldozing past us as normal.

Random Thing #4:
I should not be allowed to buy peanut M&Ms. Friends, if you see me with a bag (or 8) in hand, I beg of you, please stop me. At all costs. Even if I tell you that they're just for trail mix. Because I'm lying, right to your face.

Random Thing #5:
These things I can stare down without devouring. But they look so cute on the kitchen counter in my fall tea cup!

Random Thing #6:
Being a Mom is hard work. So many fears and worries and doubts. But my God is bigger than all that, for which I'm forever grateful.

Random Thing #7:
I feel the need to warn anyone contemplating painting their heater a coordinating color - don't do it! Just...don't. Please & Thank you.

Random Thing #8:
I'm having a slight identity crisis. Between my little shop and this blog and what I really want to do (write books) and and and... this is laughable because I'm sure nobody really cares, but it totally stresses me out. Weird. Again. Noticing a trend?   =)

Random Thing #9:
I can't stop thinking about the fact that we've been out of our decade+ home for over a year now. One whole year. One whole year! I try and remind myself that it isn't that easy to complete the projects on the To-Do list in this house while, oh I don't know, having a life, taking care of four children, dealing with their schedules. Just the other day, I psyched myself up enough to drive past our old home. And you know? It was okay, it wasn't as painful as it was before. I'm thankful for that. It really helped me start considering this place our home now.

Random Thing #10:
I'm falling hopelessly in love with the baby girl things that I'm supposed to be selling. Her closet will definitely be more loaded with goodies than mine ever will be! Like, ever!!! (Isabelle's always has been. ;) I haven't shared any of her cute fall outfits...I'll try to do that next week.)

That's it for now...Have a wonderful Saturday! We had friends over last night for homemade pizza and a bonfire, and we get to do it again tonight! Well, not pizza again, ha!

ps- Here is something new at Rose & Ruffle- what do you think?
(Yes, this one's actually for sale.)
:o)

You can also find me on facebook if you want. Thanks!
